Mini Lessons using Morning Work booklets

Today I'm going to share with you how I use my morning work resource.
click here to view the complete bundle.

This is a 30-week series that will take you through the school year.  I usually start it with my students the day we come back after Labor Day.  By then, they are becoming familiar with the rules and routines of school and are ready to start focusing on the academic aspects.  I start off by making this the first thing we do together in the morning for the first few weeks so they get the idea of how to do the work.  It should only take about 10-15 minutes in the morning.  Once they have the idea of the routine of the morning work, I set it up for them to do independently when they arrive at school in the morning.  This is where the mini-lessons come in.

After doing the work independently, we check the work together.  I project it onto the SMARTBoard, and write in the correct answers.  The children check their own work, fixing errors as necessary.  I believe this is an important part of the process because if I correct their error, it will mean nothing to them.  But if they correct their own errors, it is more likely to be meaningful to them, and they will remember not to repeat their mistake the next time.  In theory...but that's a post for a different day.

As we correct the work, I choose one thing to spend a few extra minutes on. I try to choose a different area each day of the week.  So  Monday, I might choose to focus on capitalization at the beginning of a sentence, Tuesday the focus might be phonics, Wednesday the focus might be numbers from 1-120, Thursday the focus might be adding basic facts, and Friday, the focus is always on responding to a writing prompt.  On this day, I will write my own response to whatever the prompt of the day was, and we will discuss main idea, responding to the prompt, and as the year progresses, adding detail sentences and a conclusion. Following this procedure last year, I saw a great increase in the effectiveness of my students' writing ability.

Each mini-lesson gives me the opportunity to focus on a skill, and the skills gradually spiral up to the next level.  It is a great way to work more curriculum-based practice into our daily routine.  I spent some time looking at other morning work series out there, but none of them were quite what I wanted, so I designed my own.  Hopefully it will fit your needs, too.

You can try the first week for free.  Just click on the picture below and download it.

Thanks for checking in!

What?? An iPad Air 2 Giveaway? Sign me up!!!!

Back to School Giveaway

As sad as I am to see summer coming to an end, I can't help but feel a little bit
excited about the upcoming school year.  While it is hard and exhausting getting
back into the groove, I do love meeting my new kiddos and getting to know a
whole new group of children and parents.  This year we have a new principal after
17 years with the old one.  I'm a little nervous about the changes that I know will
be coming, but I'm also excited about  the new ideas he will probably bring with
him.  This year, everything is up in the air.  Will our schedules be different?  Will we
still be doing X, Y, Z that we have done every year?

To help you get back into the excitement of back to school, the teachers of the
iTeach blog are giving away the fabulous prize pictured above.  It would be an
awesome asset to any classroom!

HOW TO ENTER
To enter, click on the picture above to go to the iTeach 1st blog, and fill out the
rafflecopter entry form at the end of the  post and leave a comment telling
us why you want to win, or how you would use the iPad in your classroom.
(I only made that big and bold because I usually don't read closely enough and
wind up missing that step.) We are accepting entries from Sunday 8/2 through
Saturday 8/8. A random winner will be selected and announced here via the
Rafflecopter on Sunday 8/9. Best wishes on this new school year and may the odds
be in your favor for the giveaway!

Enjoy the rest of your summer (if you have any left) !

Prizes galore -- and a Sean Sighting!

Oh, boy, the first prize has been given away, and it was the laminator, and the winner is -- drum roll -- Lisa Daniel!  Hope it was one of you.  But if it wasn't, don't despair!  Remember, we still have 9 more prizes to give away.  And one of the days,  these lovely gift baskets will be given away!
They have books and all kinds of other teacher goodies in them!  And heck, I'd be happy with just the buckets they are in because who doesn't need extra buckets and baskets for "stuff" in the classroom?  Be sure to head over to The Teaching Tribune to meet today's teachers, Diane from Fifth in the Middle (we love having upper el grades represented!) and Samantha, from Ms. Smarty Pants, who both have excellent organization tips for you.  While you're there, don't forget to enter the new rafflecopter.  Remember, from now on, you have to enter each day for a chance to win.  You will use the same amount each time.

I just love this button!  Aren't we so cute.  And we're just as cute in real life with our heart mouths and rosy cheeks!

Can I just say I'm a bit sort of majorly stressed about my upcoming organizational tip for you.  I am the most unorganized person I know.  My idea of organization is everything in a nice neat pile, and when the pile gets too big, move it to a storage container.  I'm pretty sure that's not a tip anyone needs, but I'll come up with something, I'm sure.

Speaking of stuff, if you are looking for stuff for back to school, there is a linky party going on with paid and free back to school resources.  Check it out by clicking on the picture below.

And finally, as many of you know from back in May when I was a weepy mess -- freaaking out -- er, calmly planning for my son's graduation and going away party, my son left on June 13 for Marine boot camp on Parris Island.

I'm sure you will understand when I say this is the first summer I have ever wished would go faster.  But in 7 Sundays, we will be leaving for Parris Island and see our son graduate as a MARINE!  I can't believe it.  It has not been easy, and I miss him like crazy, but yesterday I found this picture of him on a Facebook group I belong to.  Can you guess which one is my baby?

Enjoy your day!

For my freebie, I'm offering you this Summer Reading Journal.  At our school, each teacher posts links for recommended summer reading lists for their grade level.   I wanted to standardize the summer reading experience for my incoming students, so I created this log, which includes sheets for recording and rating the stories, and half-sheet book reports for the students to complete about the stories they read.  They can staple it all together and turn it in to me at the beginning of next year.

Facebook Rafflecopter Giveaway!

In a recent post, I was whining -- err, commenting on the fact that I couldn't run a rafflecopter on my blog, but then I found out the most wonderful thing . . . I can run a rafflecopter on my Facebook page!

So that's what I'm doing.  If you go to my rafflecopter, you can have a chance to win a copy of my newest TPT unit, Activities to  End the School Year :  When Summer Comes.

That's it for tonight.  I have a terrible headache because I stupidly slammed the van hatchback door on top of my head after putting groceries in the back. I'm going to take two aspirin and an ice pack to the couch.  Have a good night, everyone.

Geeking out!

I've never considered myself to be much of a techno-geek, but I'm geeking out here!  First, I wanted to remind you that I'm giving away Teresa's awesome Fun in the Sun with Tic-Tac-Toe games.  You can win this by entering the Rafflecopter on the giveaway tab on my Facebook page.  I set this up last night, and I didn't set it up so that you had to like my page to enter the Rafflecopter, but I think it requests it.  I did make following Teresa's TPT store mandatory, and then following her Facebook page and blog optional.

[cover fun in the sun
Click here to enter the rafflecopter or Teresa's awesome summer fun review games! Giveaway ends in 7 hours, so hurry![/caption]

So that was sort of techy-geeky, right?  But here's where I'm geeking out!!  QR codes -- not just visual, but auditory QR codes!  Oh.My. Gosh.  The possibilities are endless, right?  For my first product, I'm playing around with reading a sentence that does not have ending punctuation, and by my INTONATION, the kids have to sort the sentences into the proper ending punctuation.  Are you kidding me???   Of course, I will also make it self-checking by including a visual QR code to check their answers.  Keep an eye out for this product!

Happy Friday, all.  It's going to be a busy weekend here, with my daughter's birthday party tomorrow, and my son's Senior Youth Ministry senior night on Sunday evening.  I had a good cry putting the pictures together for the slideshow.  How did my baby grow up so fast?  (Crying again)

Today's product is called "Fun in the Sun Tic-Tac-Toe Games."  With its bright yellow cover and beachy theme, it is sure to catch the attention of beach-dreaming little ones.  The beach/summer theme is carried out throughout the whole product, with flop flops, strawberries, beach balls, Popsicles, surfboards, sand buckets, and other fun summery objects.

The packet includes three language arts review games and three math review games.  I have not used the language arts games yet, but they include the following:

I used the three math games during a Friday game day.  My kids really enjoyed playing the three different tic-tac-toe games included in the packet.  It was a great review of skills we had already practiced.  One of the games is Number Order - Before - always a more challenging skill.

No one won this game!

Another game is Number Order - After.

And the third game is telling time, which can be played two ways for differentiation -- the children can either read the time correctly, or they can read the time, and tell the time an hour later.  Time is to the hour and half-hour.

My students really enjoyed these games, and each time they played, it came out a bit differently.  What I liked about these games was the fact that they are perfect for end of the year review, that they didn't use a ton of ink, and that the directions are right on each page.  Now that my children know how to play the math games, I have put them into envelopes for early finishers and center time.  Thanks, Teresa, for creating this wonderful product that will be fantastic for end of the year review and beginning of the year review for the next grade level.

Unfortunately, my free Wordpress blog site will not allow me to run a rafflecopter, but Teresa has offered one of her "Fun in the Sun" resources for a giveaway.  If you would like a chance to win this item, please leave a comment on my Facebook page under this post.

https://www.facebook.com/pages/Practice-Makes-Perfect/319911501444232?ref=hl

I will have my random number generator, also know as whoever happens to be home at that time, pick a number on Saturday at 12:00 noon for the winner.
