A Place I Wish I Was

I'm linking up today with Sugar and Spice for Wordless Wednesday.

My chalk drawing from the Chalk The Block event in our downtown area.  My Happy Place.

The coconuts are bit sketchy.  Looking at the picture, I realized I should have added a third one.

Where is your happy place?

How Do You Use That? Grammar Goofs and Spelling Spoofs

UPDATE:  In this post I talk about how I use my Grammar Goofs and Spelling Spoofs resource.  If you would like to try before you buy, my August Grammar Goofs are a forever freebie.  Try them out by clicking the picture below!

Today, I want to share with you the story behind one of my resources, the why I made it and how I use it story.  In our reading series, there is a section called "Daily Proofreading Practice," where you put a few sentences on the board and the children fix the mistakes in them.  I was using the ones suggested in the teacher's manual, but they didn't make sense.  There would be two totally unrelated sentences, like these,

Dad sate on the mat.  We like tew nap.

Well, that's nice, but what does dad sitting on the mat have to do with us napping?  So I started making up my own to put on the board.  Then I thought, hey, I can squeeze in some grammar practice as well with these.  So I started writing sentences with no capitals and no end marks.  Now, I had something that looks like this,

the fat cat sat  the fat cat sat on the mat

With the advent of flippable and interactive notebooks, I designed a way to use these daily proofreading practices as part of my morning work time that would last for one week.

After the first few weeks of doing them with the whole group of first graders, the children were easily able to transition into assembling the flippables on Monday, and then completing the work themselves in the morning. We check them together Monday - Thursday, and the kids make their own corrections to their work. I believe they learn more correcting their own work than if I correct them.  On Friday, I collect the booklets and check to see if they are applying the skills we practice.

I loosely follow the scope and sequence of skills laid out in our reading series.  These are designed as a progressive series, so each month, I put more errors in the proofreading for the children to find and correct.

Here's a sample of what the kids were correcting in March.

And this is a sample of the last page we did in early June.

By the last few months of school, the kids are able to correct mistakes in verb tenses, subject and verb agreement mistakes, i.e. June is instead of June are, as well as spelling errors.

The design of the flippable allows them to easily refer back to the original sentence.  This is much better for some of my students who really have a hard time copying off the board.

So there you have it, the story behind my Daily Grammar and Spelling Practice:  Grammar Goofs and Spelling Spoofs.

I have every month completed from August through May.  August is free, September through May are $2.00 each.  Or you can purchase them money saving 10-month bundle for only $14,00!

Have a great day, everyone!

Happy Fourth of July (blog hop)

Welcome to our Fourth of July blog hop, and Happy Birthday, USA!

How many veterans do you have in your life?  I have three in my life.  My grandpa was in the Merchant Marines during World War II.
You can click the picture above to learn more about the Merchant Marines.

My husband served in the Air Force for eight years as a flight nurse.  He was stationed in Germany and New Hampshire.  Luckily, he was serving in a time of peace, so he didn't see any action as far as having to fly in and out of active war zones.
You can click the picture above to learn more about the Air Force.

And of course, you all know my son is a Marine.

Today, on this 238th birthday of our country, let's remember and pray for the men and women, from the Revolutionary War to the War on Terror, who have bravely fought, died or come home forever changed by their experiences.  Let's pray for those currently deployed that they will remain safe.  Let's pray for those who will be brave enough to step up and answer the call in the future to protect our freedom.  We may not be a perfect country, but my heart swells with pride and I have to swallow the lump in my throat every time I see a flag waving in the breeze, or a hear the Star Spangled Banner being played.

So be sure to thank the veterans or active duty service people in your life.  They have had a hand in making this country great!

It's All Fun and Games -- Hopscotch!

Today, we want to send you on a wild game of hopscotch, hopscotching through our blogs to collect various games you can use in your classroom!

This is

And today, I have a great freebie game for you.  This is a spelling gameboard I pulled out of my Quick Activities for Spelling pack.

This is a great game to use either as teams (you can project it onto a board and use circles to keep track of the teams), or with the children working with partners.  I let my students use it on Friday mornings after they finish their morning work.  They are allowed to work as teams, so four children playing all together, two teams of two.  The children would get out their spelling notebooks, and first they had to give each other words from the current spelling list.  Then, they could go back to any lesson to quiz each other on the words.  One team gives the word, the other team spells.  The first team checks the spelling, and if it is correct, the second team moves forward a space.  Then they switch, and the second team gives the word, the first team spells, and the second team checks.  They continue until someone wins the game.  My students really looked forward to Friday mornings and spelling game time.

As I said, this is part of my larger spelling unit, Quick Spelling Activities
